Tour guides oppose entry into PA-ruled areas

Following the Defense Ministry’s Sunday announcement that it would allow 50 Israeli tour guides to enter the West Bank cities of Bethlehem and Jericho, the Israeli Tour Guides Association issued a statement on Monday urging its members not to agree to lead tour groups into PA-ruled areas and calling on the government to withdraw its approval.

“The Tour Guide Association forcefully objects to the entrance of Israeli tour guides into Bethlehem and Jericho. The association demands the immediate cancellation of permission for Israeli tour guides to enter the Palestinian Authority,” read the association’s statement.

The association claims the decision exposes the tour guides to great physical danger, fails to provide them with sufficient assurances in case something happens to them, and introduces competition in the form of Palestinian tour guides being allowed to lead groups in Israel.
