Tunisia, Mauritania sign security accord

TUNIS, Tunisia — Tunisia and Mauritania have signed a security accord, marking new cooperation in the north African region where an al-Qaida affiliate is known to operate.

Officials said Wednesday the deal was signed a day earlier by the countries' foreign ministers on the sidelines of a visit to Tunisia by President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. No details were provided.

Among the two countries, Mauritania is generally seen as facing the greater threat from al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, an affiliate of Osama bin Laden's terror network in north Africa.

Seven Tunisians were convicted in October on terrorism charges linked to accusations that they had sought to join the group. Tunisia and Mauritania are members of the Union of Arab Maghreb along with Algeria, Libya and Morocco.
