Turkish PM slams German over Cyprus comments

ANKARA — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said German Chancellor Angela Merkel should apologize for accusing Turkish Cypriots of not doing enough to reach a deal to reunify Cyprus.
Erdogan said Friday that Merkel's remarks during a visit to Cyprus this week show how much of a stranger she is to the issue, which has hurt Turkey's efforts to join the European Union.Merkel praised Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias, saying "we see that you are taking many steps and we also see that the Turkish side is not responding accordingly."
Cyprus was split into a Turkish Cypriot north and a Greek Cypriot south in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup that sought to unify the island nation with Greece.
