Turkish troops chase Kurds into northern Iraq

ANKARA, Turkey  — Turkish soldiers crossed the border into northern Iraq to chase Kurdish rebels on Wednesday, said military sources in Ankara.
The military said three commando companies and one special forces battalion penetrated two miles (three kilometers) into Iraq. It said four rebels were killed in the incursion.
The military said warplanes pounded Kurdish rebel positions and mortar and anti-aircraft units deeper inside Iraqi territory.
The military said the cross-border offensive was ordered after the rebels attempted an unsuccessful attack on troops near the Turkish-Iraqi border.
