UN Lebanon envoy says was told of possible attacks

UNITED NATIONS - The outgoing UN special envoy to Lebanon said on Thursday Lebanese authorities had warned him of possible threats against the United Nations in that country in the wake of recent attacks on the world body.

"There were some credible reports that were shared with us, with the UN, by the Lebanese army itself of potential threats in the past few weeks," UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams told a farewell news conference.

He gave no details but said the enhanced security in Lebanon was part of a general heightening of security at UN facilities worldwide since an August suicide bomb attack on UN headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, killed 23 people.
