UN official named Darfur

A UN envoy has been selected by the United Nations and the African Union to head their joint peacekeeping mission in Sudan's conflict-wracked Darfur region, the UN announced Wednesday. Ibrahim Gambari, a former Nigerian foreign minister and ambassador to the United Nations who joined the UN Secretariat in 1999, is expected to take the job on Jan. 1, UN deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said. Gambari serves as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's special adviser on the International Compact on Iraq and other issues, including trying to promote political reconciliation in Myanmar between the military government and the pro-democracy movement led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
