UNHCR says 7,100 Somalis need safe refuge in Kenya

GENEVA — The UN refugee agency on Friday said 7,100 Somali refugees are stuck just inside the Kenyan border dangerously close to the violence they are fleeing.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is urging Kenyan authorities to allow the Somalis access to a safe site already identified.Spokesman Adrian Edwards told reporters in Geneva that the civilians — mostly women, children and the elderly — face dire health and security conditions.
Edwards said another 30,000 have been displaced inside Somalia by clashes between and Islamist group and a government-allied militia in the Beled-Hawa district. No humanitarian organization has had access to them.
