US cable claims Swiss tried linking Iran, Gitmo to UBS

GENEVA — Switzerland allegedly tried to end a US tax evasion case against its largest bank by emphasizing Swiss cooperation with the United States on two unrelated issues: Sanctions against Iran and Guantanamo detainees, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable published Thursday.
The classified cable of July 1, 2009, obtained by WikiLeaks, cites a senior US diplomat in Bern as saying the Swiss government would stop Swedish-owned engineering company Colenco's involvement with an Iranian research reactor.
It recounts a meeting between former Swiss Economy Minister Doris Leuthard and US charge d'affaires Leigh Carter where she raised the possibility of taking in freed Guantanamo detainees to show Switzerland's commitment to resolving bilateral issues.
