US condemns assassination attempt on Lebanese politician

The United States on Wednesday condemned "in the strongest terms" what appeared to be an assassination attempt earlier in the week on Samir Geagea, a Lebanese politician and an outspoken critic of Hezbollah and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The US condemnation stated that Lebanon had been "trying to bring about an end to impunity for political assassinations," referencing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) established to investigate inter alia the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

The US called on the government of Lebanon to fully cooperate with the STL by arresting those indicted and providing funding for the tribunal's continued operations.
