US diplomats call top Arab leaders in bid to salvage talks

US Middle East envoy George Mitchell and top diplomat Jeffrey Feltman have phoned prominent Arab leaders in a bid to salvage negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, assistant US Secretary of State P.J. Crowley said Friday.
According to Crowley, Mitchell and Feltman - who formerly served as the US ambassador to Lebanon - phoned Arab League chief Amr Moussa and the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates over the past two days.
"We have reached out ... to a range of leaders," Crowley said. "We jointly remain committed to this process, acknowledging that, obviously, it is a difficult environment, given the Israeli statement."
