US elects Baldwin in Wisconsin as first openly gay Senator

WASHINGTON - Media outlets projected that Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin won the US Senate seat from Wisconsin in Tuesday's election, which will make her the country's first openly gay senator.
Baldwin defeated former Wisconsin governor and secretary of health and human services Tommy Thompson. She takes the seat being vacated by Senator Herb Kohl, a Democrat.
