US official to attend Hiroshima memorial for 1st time

The US is planning to send a representative to an annual Hiroshima atom bomb memorial service for the first time, it was reported Wednesday.
The attendance of the official was reportedly planned at the request of US President Barack Obama, who has repeatedly stressed his strong views opposing nuclear weapons and expressed a desire to visit Hiroshima himself.
Britain and France are said to be intending to send their own representatives to the memorial service, which is also due to be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
