US praises decision to delay Silwan plan

The US on Tuesday praised Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat for agreeing to a last-minute request from Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that he postpone the launch of a redevelopment plan in a section of the city’s Silwan neighborhood until an agreement is reached with its Palestinian residents, whose homes would be torn down as part of the proposal.
"We've noted that the mayor is going to continue his discussions with the residents before proceeding with moving the plan through official processes," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said.
"We appreciate his intervention," Crowley added, urging Israelis and Palestinians to refrain from steps that "undermine trust."
