US praises Italys firm

The White House praised the government of Italy on Thursday for announcing it would send 1,000 more troops to Afghanistan in 2010, according to a report by AFP. "Italy's new commitment demonstrates the firm resolve of NATO allies and ISAF partners to succeed in our shared Afghan mission," the news agency quoted National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer as saying. AFP reported that after revealing the large deployment planned for next year, Rome expressed hope that a withdrawal from Afghanistan would occur in 2011, as suggested by US President Barack Obama.
