US State Dept. calls Syrian security forces 'barbaric'

US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland on Tuesday called the Syrian security forces 'reprehensible' and accused them of 'barbaric shootings', Voice of America reported.
This comes after a twelve year old was shot on Saturday by a police officer at close range, Army Radio reported.
"Wide-scale arrests of young men and boys, brutal torture, and other abases of basic human rights is reprehensible," Nuland said, according to AFP.
An estimated 1,600 civilians and military personnel have been killed since a violent crackdown began in March against demonstrators calling for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and make way for a democratic system of government.
