US urges accountability for Bahrain rights abuses

WASHINGTON - The United States on Wednesday urged accountability for those responsible for human rights abuses in Bahrain and said the government must take steps to avoid future violations.
A government-commissioned panel charged with investigating abuses found that Bahrain's security forces used excessive force to suppress pro-democracy protests earlier this year, including torturing detainees to get confessions.
"The report identifies a number of disturbing human rights abuses that took place during this period," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.
"It is now incumbent upon the government of Bahrain to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations and put in place institutional changes to ensure that such abuses do not happen again," the statement said.
