Vacationing prisoner arrested after trying to steal taxi

A Haifa taxi driver was robbed early Sunday by a passenger who asked to be driven to Tal-El, a community in northern Israel, and later turned out to be a convicted prisoner.
As the car neared Tal-El, the passenger threatened the driver with a knife and demanded money. After stealing about NIS 1000, the passenger forced the driver to exit the cab, got into the driver's seat and sped away.
Acre district police chased after the vehicle and arrested the thief 20 minutes later. His remand will be extended later in the day.
According to police, the suspect is a vacationing prisoner who was sentenced to five years in jail for drug-related offenses.
