Vice Premier Shalom stays out of Likud leadership race

Vice Premier Silvan Shalom did not enter the January 31 Likud leadership race by Sunday's deadline, leaving Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, party activists Moshe Feiglin and Vladimir Herczberg as the only candidates.
Netanyahu is trying to maximize voter turnout in the race by changing the way funding is allocated to Likud branches. In the past, branches received more funding if they decided their central committee members on their own without an election. But because the election for the central committee is being held at the same time as the leadership race, Netanyahu decided branches would instead be funded based on how many of their branch members they bring out to vote.
