Volcanic ash to close north German airports

BERLIN - German air safety authorities warned they would have to shut down Bremen and Hamburg airports from early on Wednesday because of volcanic ash from Iceland and Berlin could also potentially be affected later in the day.
The air safety authority said late on Tuesday landings and take-offs at Bremen would be halted from 0300 GMT followed by Hamburg an hour later and possibly Berlin from about 1000 GMT.
It said the decision was taken after meteorological services warned that the volcanic ash concentrations in certain areas of northern German would reach recommended safety thresholds.
Additionally, it said Hannover airport was right on the edge of the contaminated air space but so far no accurate forecast could be given of whether it would be affected as well.
