Wikileaks: Bahrain wanted to engage Israeli media

The Bahraini government wanted to engage with Israeli media, in support of the Arab Peace Initiative and the Obama administration, according to documents released by Wikileaks on Wednesday.

According to the US diplomatic cable of a meeting between Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid and US Mideast envoy Mitchell, Khalid said that "he would like to engage with the Israeli media, and that....[Bahraini government] contact with Israeli media would be helpful."

"Engaging directly with the Israeli government publicly and privately, the foreign minister said he could no longer defend internally his past and close contacts with Israel, in light of Foreign Minister [Avigdor] Lieberman's statements about Annapolis," the cable said.
