Woman named head of Palestinian statistics bureau

The Palestinian Authority announced on Sunday that a woman has been appointed as President of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics [PCBS].
The US-educated Ola Awad, a mother of two, was appointed as head of the important non-ministerial governmental institution by PA President Mahmoud Abbas.
Awad has served as acting head of the bureau since 2009. This is the first time that a woman is assigned to the top post. She has a master degree in Business Administration from Boston University and a bachelor degree in Economy from Bir Zeit University.
The PCBS is the provider of official statistics on Palestinians. It was one of the first Palestinian institutions to be established after the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993.
