Women march in Tel Aviv to mark int'l day against violence

Dozens of women marched on Thursday from Beit WIZO on King David Boulevard in Tel Aviv to Beit Ariella to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The marchers carried with them boxes simulating coffins as a symbol of women murdered by their husbands. Nurit Laufman of WIZO, who organized the event, said in the past year, 18 women were killed by their husbands.

Social Affairs Minister Yitzhak Herzog hinted at the Bar-Lev case when he remarked at the rally at Beit Ariella that, "Unfortunately, public discourse on violence against women, especially these days, deals with pornography, voyeurism, and sensationalism and shifts the spotlight from the very serious issues manifested in Israeli society: persecution of women at work, silencing women at home, murders and violence against them, and their retreating to shelters. We have to say in a loud voice: We can't turn a blind eye to this and we need to build a dam against violence. This is the real story we have to confront."
