Ya'alon defends Jubran for not singing Hatikva

Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) said Wednesday that criticism of Supreme Court Justice Salim Jubran over his refusal to sing the national anthem Tuesday was "strange, unnecessary and stinks of persecution based on his [race]."

Ya'alon noted that Jubran stood during the anthem's singing and showed respect for it. In the IDF, he added, non-Jews are required only to stand and salute, not to sing the words to Hatikva. Demanding that non-Jews sing the words is provocative, he said.

The anthem includes the lines: "A Jewish soul still yearns," and "the hope of two-thousand years."
