Opposition leader MK Shelly Yechimovich (Labor) condemned the Finance Ministry’s intention to raise the quantities of natural gas available for export on Thursday afternoon.
“Natural gas is a critical strategic resource, and its export will hurt the economic strength of Israel and its energetic security,” Yechimovich said in a statement released by her office, charging that exporting natural gas would lead to more expensive electricity at home. The opposition leader went on to criticize Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for making decisions “contrary to the opinion of energy professionals,” calling his vision “short-term” and subject to gas tycoons.
“This is against the national interest of the Israeli public,” Yechimovich said. “I intend to issue a bill that will ensure that Israeli citizens, Israeli industry and the energy market benefit from the natural treasures of Israel.”
