Yemen army clashes with Islamists in south Yemen

ADEN - Central government forces in Yemen, facing weeks of protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh, fought Islamist militants on Sunday who had seized buildings in a south Yemen town, residents said.
One soldier was killed, they said, adding that the army was shelling buildings in Jaar in Abyan province from a hill overlooking the town.Witnesses said on Saturday that a coalition of different Islamist groups had seized control of key buildings in the town and that there was no visible presence of government security forces.
The government often reports attacks by al Qaeda militants in Abyan province.
Al Arabiya television had reported earlier that six soldiers were killed in an ambush by Al Qaeda militants in the south but gave no specific location.
