Young woman loses fetus, uterus after amniocentesis

The Health Ministry will look into the rare case reported on Wednesday of a 20-year-old pregnant woman who developed a severe infection following amniocentesis, which led to the death of the fetus, required surgery to remove her uterus and left her in serious condition.

The ministry said that infections following the puncturing of the uterus to remove amniotic fluid to check for genetic disorders are not uncommon. Therefore, the case did not require reporting by the hospitals involved to the health authorities. The ministry learned about the case for the first time from an Israeli media report, its spokeswoman said.

A week ago, the woman, who was at the end of the first trimester of her first pregnancy, underwent a routine amniocentesis by a gynecologist at Bnei Zion Medical Center in Haifa and went home. Later she felt unwell and was taken to Laniado Medical Center in Netanya where she was found to suffer from a serious bacterial infection that did not respond to treatment. The fetus was found to be dead and removed, as was her infected uterus, which caused sepsis.

The ministry said it would look into whether the uterus was punctured during the amniocentesis, which is rare. So is the puncturing of the fetus. There is less than a one percent risk of spontaneous abortion from the procedure.
