Monday, July 23 In a Hebrew play on words, organizers of a discussion marathon in the aftermath of the Tisha Be'Av evening service at ICCY, 12 Emek Refaim Street, German Colony, Jerusalem, have given the event the title "The Het before the Tet." Tisha Be'Av, which commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, is a collective punishment for baseless hatred, the underlying message being that hatred for no valid reason is a sin. Het, which is the letter in the Hebrew alphabet preceding Tet, is also the word for sin, and Tet is the ninth letter in the alphabet - in this instance symbolizing Tisha Be'Av, the ninth day in the Hebrew calendar month of Av. Speakers will include Rabbi Benny Lau, author Yochi Brandeis, Dr. Micha Goodman, Rabbi Naama Kelman and Avner Haramati. The discussion will then be opened up for audience participation. Tuesday, July 24 Film-makers, directors and script-writers specializing in Jewish theme cinema, will participate in a Tisha Be'Av marathon on films dealing with love and baseless hatred. Film clips will be screened from a number of productions dealing with one or both of these themes and discussion will be led by Amir Boshri, Leizi Shapira, and David Ben Shitrit. The event begins at 2 p.m. at Beit Avi Hai, 44 King George Street, Jerusalem, on the corner of Keren Kayemet. Monday, July 30 Friends and Colleagues of the distinguished military correspondent Zeev Schiff will discuss issues of communications and security at a memorial symposium to be held in his honor at 4:30 p.m. in the Bar Shira Auditorium at Tel Aviv University. Speakers will include Defense Minister Ehud Barak, journalists Eitan Haber, Nahum Barnea and Amos Harel, Zvi Stauber, head of the TAU's Institute for National Security Studies, Dalia Dorner, retired Supreme Court Justice and head of the Israel Press Council and Amos Schocken, publisher of Ha'aretz. Accountability of the Media in the Second Lebanon War in the light of the Keshev report is the subject of a symposium to be held at 6 p.m. in the Brender Hall of the Law Faculty at Tel Aviv University.
