Approximately 209,700 job seekers were registered with the Israel Employment Services in January, down from the 229,600 in the parallel month last year, the IES said Wednesday. The IES said that 189,100 of the total were previously unemployed while the remainder were new registrations. Close to 40 percent of the previously unemployed had been out of work for nine months or more, it said. Of the new registrations, 59% had been retrenched, 14.5% were on welfare-to-work programs and 13% had just entered the job market, mostly coming from the army.
