Afcon E.B. Wind Energies, part of the Afcon Industries Group, signed an agreement on Wednesday with Israel Electric to build two wind farms in Israel. The two farms, one at Ramat Sirin, above the Jordan Valley, and one at Ma'aleh Gilboa, above Beit She'an, will produce 22 megawatts of electricity. Twenty six turbines will be erected, each to produce 850 kilowatts. The project still has to receive several planning approvals and secure appropriate financing, but IE has committed to helping Afcon design the farms, Afcon said in a statement. A feed-in tariff for wind power is supposed to be set in the coming months. Government officials have said that the tariff would probably vary between several options depending on the farm's conditions. Afcon is a joint venture with Dr. Eli Ben-Dov, who has been researching wind potential in Israel for the last 30 years. He worked for IE for many years before going private. He has charged the government with wrapping wind turbines in so much red tape that they cannot move at all.
