Prime Minister and acting Finance Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday the government needed to incur changes to the framework of the 2007 budget in order to maintain budget discipline and finance the government's commitments to defense and education. "We need to make changes within the framework of the 2007 budget in order to fulfill the government's commitments in the fields of education and defense," Olmert said at the government's weekly cabinet meeting. He emphasized the importance of maintaining budget discipline for the government to reach economic targets. Olmert responded to the proposed modifications to the 2007 budget presented by Budget Supervisor Koby Haber, according to whom, government commitments and private legislation costs were added to the budget since September 2006 amounting to an expense of NIS 4.2 billion. Haber added that either the government needed to make changes or cuts to the 2007 budget or cancel part of its previous decisions in order to maintain budget discipline.
