The Ashdod Port Company held an extensive emergency training exercise on Tuesday in an effort to ensure that the country's largest port remains as secure as possible in times of crisis. Included in the drill were representatives from the police, firefighters, Magen David Adom, Home Front Command and Navy. Port officials reported that the exercise went better than expected and thanked all of the different agencies for their cooperation in making the drill a success. Ashdod Port handled around 693,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units - a standard shipping measure) in 2006, an increase of 18 percent from 2005. Cargo unloaded and loaded in 2006 amounted to 15 million tons while the company's income increased some 15% to NIS 1 billion.
