Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz on Thursday submitted to the cabinet for approval a proposal that sections 3 and 7 of Road 6 between Yokne’am and Somekh Junction in the Western Galilee will be a toll road.In February, the cabinet approved immediate construction of sections 3 and 7 of Road 6 and instructed the Transportation and Finance ministries to consider construction of the sections as a BOT (build, operate, transfer) project. The franchisee will finance and build the sections and then operate them for 30 years.Katz said extending Road 6 northward and southward was part of the ministry’s transportation revolution to bring the periphery closer to the center of the country.“This is the greatest contribution that we can give the residents of the North,” he said.Section 7 is a five-kilometer stretch between Yokne’am and the Tel Kashish interchange. The section will include a 1.7- kilometer tunnel to bypass Yokne’am.Section 3 is a 12-km. stretch between Tel Kashish via Ha’amakim interchange to the Somekh interchange. The section will include two tunnels: the 2-km. Rekhesim tunnel and the 400-meter Ibtin tunnel.The section will also include upgrading two sections of Road 70, which will become part of Road 6. There will be no toll on these two sections.Katz said statutory plans for sections 3 and 7 were already undergoing the approval process at the relevant planning commissions. His proposal calls for the publication of a public tender to build the two sections.
