FORTIS FORTRESSRami Fortis is one of the country’s most prominent rock singers.His 1978 album Plonter was considered a breakthrough in Israeli music and remains one of the most influential in the history of Hebrew rock. In 2009, he concluded a successful international tour and won the composer and songwriter of the year (together with his colleague, Berry Sakharoff). 3. BRAZIL UNPLUGGEDMusical legend Gilberto Gil is one of Brazil’s most important singers, composers and instrumentalists, has recorded over 30 albums and is synonymous with Brazilian music. He’s returning to Israel with his full six-piece electric band for Gilberto Gil for All, in which he’ll play acoustic versions of his top songs.

4. ROCKING TO THE COREOddball funksters The Apples bring their explosive live experience to Haifa’s Beat Club. The Israel-based band is a melting pot of funk, hip hop, big-band jazz, rock and turntablism – all delivered in its energetic and offbeat style. Hard-core stuff.

5. THE FLUTTER OF WINGSDuring selected days in July and August, Mini-Israel presents a truly unique show in its brand-new amphitheater. The Butterfly Effect is a laser and acrobatic show in combination with video art, an original score, and breathtaking aerial stunts. The show tells the story of two ancient cultures that battle over the control of light in a way that brings together the circus world and the theater world and is a collaboration between Uri Vidilivsky, one of Israel’s most prominent theater and dance composers, and Circus Y, a pioneer and leader in Israeli circus.

6. SAND IN HANDThe Eretz Israel Museum’s latest exhibition is made up of dozens of huge sand installations depicting the most beloved fairy tales from around the world, including Snow White, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Gulliver, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin. There will also be a special workshop for kids in which they will be taught how to make their own sand structures. NIS 60.

7. FLEA-MARKET FINDS
After the day’s bargain-hunting is over, the narrow streets of Jaffa’s flea market will come alive with renewed energy as musicians and artists display their talents every Thursday night. Pick from a variety of musical styles while browsing among the cafes, stalls and eclectic wares.

8. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOODEver wanted to go to a certain restaurant but found it too expensive? Throw that excuse out the window this week as 60 of the country’s most popular kosher and non-kosher restaurants participate in the annual Chef Tochal (a play on the words sit/shev, chef and eat) festival.During its run, each restaurant will offer a special menu at the delectable price of NIS 84, which includes hors d’oeuvre, main dish and dessert.

9. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LOOKING GLASSThe Israel Opera presents its version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale Alice in Wonderland. The production focuses on the child Alice who discovers a world filled with fantastical creatures like the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and a Queen who does not like to lose. Accompanied by an ensemble from the Ra’anana Symphonette Orchestra with composition by David Sebba.Sung in Hebrew.

10. MASHINA MADNESSTwo decades ago, the international rock world may have had U2, Queen and R.E.M., but we had our very own Mashina. Together with singer/songwriter Ehud Banai, Mashina guitarist Shlomi Bracha co-wrote the song “Rakevet Laila Lekahir” (Night Train to Cairo). This helped Mashina break out of obscurity and into the charts. Since then, Banai and Mashina have cooperated on various projects. Now catch Israel’s all-time top rock band as it rocks Tel Aviv’s Barby Club.
