Six people, including former Israel OC Navy Maj.-Gen. (res.) Micha Ram, have been saved by organ donations from Ido Ziv, a 26-year-old man who was killed in a motorcycle accident. All are recovering from surgery at Sheba Medical Center, Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus and Tel Aviv's Sourasky Medical Center.
The 64-year-old Ram, who was the commander of the navy between 1989 and 1992, received a lung. The other lung went to another recipient. A 30-year-old man received the liver, a 34-year-old man received a kidney, and a 36-year-old woman received a kidney and pancreas. A 63-year-old man received the heart.
The donor, whose parents were told after the accident that he had only a few hours to live, decided immediately to donate his organs. Israel Transplant said that because he had Type AB+ blood, his organs could be donated to almost any recipient, thus people who would otherwise have had to wait years were suitable organ recipients.
