Beilinson to probe risk of improper sterilization

An internal investigation will be conducted at the Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus in Petah Tikva after it was discovered Monday that some equipment used for surgery on eight patients had undergone only partial drying after complete sterilization. The Health Ministry, which received a report (along with Clalit Health Services, which owns the hospital), said that the risk of infection in the patients was "minuscule." The medical center said the partial drying of the equipment in the autoclave (sterilization machine) was due to a technician error by one worker. Eight patients who had surgery with equipment that was only partially dried were informed of the incident but were told that the infectious disease unit had declared the risk of infection was very slight.
