Blood drive turnout poor, levels critically low

Only 60 people have heeded the call of Magen David Adom to help renew supplies of Type O and RH- blood of all types, MDA said on Monday. The shortage is caused by a decline in donors and an increase in hospital use of blood. As a result, some hospitals may be forced to postpone elective operations, and their ongoing activities will be disrupted. The emergency blood drive will continue Tuesday at MDA's Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa stations and its Central Blood Bank at Tel Hashomer between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. and at its Beersheba, Petah Tikva and Hadera branches between 4 to 9 p.m. More information can be obtained by calling (03) 530-0400. Organized groups of over 20 people should call (03) 5300402. Every donor receives blood insurance for a year for himself and his immediate family.
