The popular Gerber brand urgently recalled its pureed carrot baby food from Israeli store shelves Thursday after dangerous levels of cadmium were found in the product. The carcinogenic metal was found during tests carried out on samples of the product by the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Health was planning to carry out similar tests on other Gerber-brand pureed baby foods.
Cadmium, a naturally-occuring metal, is best-known for its use in batteries. Cadmium is recognized to produce toxic effects on humans as a result of long-term exposure. It is known to be carcinogenic and have adverse health effects on the lungs and kidneys.
