Israel has approximately two hospital beds for every thousand citizens, a third less than 30 years ago, the Health Ministry announced on Thursday morning.
A third of the beds are considered old and have been used by hospitals for about 30 years, the ministry said.
According to the ministry, the number of beds counted in the north and south of the country was particularly low.
Further, the average period of hospitalization has dropped by six percent since 2000.
The most cramped hospitals noted were Sha'are Tzedek and Hadassah Hospitals in Jerusalem, Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, Nahariya Hospital and Laniado Hospital in Netanya.
Health Minister Ya'acov Ben-Yizri told Israel Radio that the amount of Israel's hospital beds [per capita] was among the lowest in the western world. Ben-Yizri insisted that one thousand beds must be added within two years and that the total number of beds must grow by 2,500 within a decade.
