The Knesset Labor, Social Affairs and Health Committee decided on Tuesday to establish a committee for preparing a "national program for pupils' health."
While the Treasury has repeatedly ordered the Health Ministry to cut back on public nurses in the school system, claiming that the state is not responsible for providing preventive medicine and first aid in the schools, the committee demanded that the Treasury immediately transfer NIS 17 million to the Health Ministry to ensure minimum services for the new school year in September. Currently one nurse is responsible for dozens of schools, causing a steady decline in examinations, vaccinations and health counseling.
