A special day to raise awareness about high blood pressure and encourage testing for people of all ages will be held Tuesday. An estimated one million Israelis have hypertension, but half are unaware of it and many of the others are not receiving proper treatment and follow-up.
High blood pressure is known as the "silent killer," causing stroke, heart disease, kidney disorders and other medical problems if not treated by exercise, diet and/or medications.
Some 1,000 of Magen David Adom's staffers and volunteers will measure blood pressure at 150 shopping centers, institutions and other public places between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. The aim of the free service is to identify as many people with undiagnosed hypertension as possible.
Another main event will be at Holon's Wolfson Medical Center, which is inviting the general public to a free event from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
All participants can have their blood pressure checked, hear lectures by doctors, ask questions, and receive nutritional advice from a dietitian.
