Desktop: When software just won't go away

There's a person out there I'd like to send a message to: If you are the one who keeps sending me e-mail with little bouncy, dancing and singing icons - please stop.

There's a person out there I'd like to send a message to: If you are the one who keeps sending me e-mail with little bouncy, dancing and singing icons - please stop. If I have to look at one more smiley face doing the Lido Shuffle, I'm going to scream. I believe I am speaking for a lot of people here. We love your messages - but they need to be more "mature." Chances are you might have felt that people have been looking at you funny, leaving you wondering about whether you have offended them in any way. Trust me; it's those e-mail icons. Dump them. What's that? You've tried to uninstall them, but they just won't go away? I feel your pain. It looked like a lot of fun, with all those cute smiling, bouncing icons. And there were ads for it on almost every Internet site, even the legit ones. And it was free. What could be bad? Let this be a lesson to you: The only software (freeware or otherwise) that you should use are programs recommended by yours truly (link below). And here's something else to remember: Never install a program that doesn't come with an uninstaller. Too late, though; the e-mail icon program turned out to be an uninstallable lemon, and you've got a bunch of other programs that you can't get rid of. Here at Newzgeek Central we install everything to ferret out the junk from the gold - so you don't have to. But that leaves me with a big problem - all those programs that are so poorly written that they don't uninstall properly, or at all, get stuck on my PC. How, you ask, do I get rid of all that useless junk? It's time to let you in on a little computer biz trade secret: When I install programs, I can't risk that they're going to corrupt my system, forcing me to do major repairs/reinstalls (who has time?). Fortunately, there are a number of "installation guards" - like Total Uninstall (http://www.ginstall.com) - that allow you to get a program working, installing and then, when you're ready, removing all of its registry entries. Keeps everything clean and neat. But if you didn't realize you were going to get stuck, and installed your problem program using Windows' usual installation process, Total Uninstall won't help you. Instead, what you need is the free Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/). Revo will go through your computer, seeking out the programs you have installed, along with their associated registry files - and offer to uninstall them, even if they don't appear on the Windows uninstaller list. Plus, it'll get rid of all sorts of junk files, like temp files, Web caches, etc. And check out the program's cool "hunter" mode, where you just point and click to uninstall. Friend (you know who you are) - I expect your next message to me will be neat, clean and dancing-and-singing icon free. http://www.newzgeek.com
