Germany, Israel expand scientific cooperation

Agreement to expand cooperation in the fields of cancer research, degenerative disease research, cyberspace.

Despite diplomatic tensions between Jerusalem and Berlin, Science and Technology Minister Daniel Herschkowitz and his German counterpart Prof. Aneta Shaaban signed an agreement Thursday to expand scientific cooperation in the fields of cancer research, degenerative disease research (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s) and cyberspace.
The signing ceremony in Germany increases scientific cooperation that already includes 20 projects in cancer, marine sciences and water technology. The investment totals 2 million euros a year.
Thursday’s meeting was warm and friendly, said Herschkowitz.
As part of the joint effort, the two countries will encourage young scientists on both sides to work together. The budget for cancer research will be expanded by another NIS 1.5 million. In addition, Germany and Israel will encourage scientists to carry out joint projects as part of the European Framework for Research and Development.
