Israel is holding Glaucoma Awareness Month along with other countries around the world. The eye disease, which is the second most common cause of blindness in the world, results from pressure of fluid in the eye on the optic nerve. Some 67 million people around the globe suffer from glaucoma, of which 6.6 million are blind.
Its prevalence rises significantly after the age of 40. It is a “silent disease,” as sufferers are not aware of it until they begin to lose their vision. People with a family history of glaucoma are six times more likely to contract it, but it can be prevented with painless regular checkups and treated with suitable eye drops or surgical or laser treatments to reduce pressure in the early stages. At a later stage, damage is irreversible.
The Israel Glaucoma Group, founded 20 years ago and comprising ophthalmologists and other experts, issued the alert to increase public awareness among the general public as well as physicians who do not specialize in the field.
