2 police killed, 3 wounded in roadside blast in southern Afghanistan

A roadside blast hit a police patrol in southern Afghanistan, leaving two officers dead and three others wounded, an official said Tuesday. The patrol was attacked inside Kandahar city late Monday, said Kandahar provincial police chief Sayed Agha Saqib. He blamed Taliban militants for the attack. Militants frequently use roadside and suicide attacks against Afghan and foreign troops in the country. Over 900 policemen died in violent incidents last year, the highest number of casualties per year for the fledgling force since the fall of the Taliban after the US-led invasion in 2001.
