27 suspected Taliban killed in NW Afghanistan

Clashes and airstrikes killed 27 suspected Taliban in volatile southern Afghanistan, the Defense Ministry said Sunday. The clashes occurred over the past 24 hours in the Shinkay district of Zabul province, ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said. Airstrikes were used in the operation following intelligence reports of militant activity in the area, he said, adding that there were no reports of civilian casualties. The claim could not be independently verified because the incident occurred in a remote, insurgency-plagued area.
