6 monks among 30 sentenced to prison for Tibet violence

Six Buddhist monks were among 30 people sentenced by a Chinese court to three years to life in prison in the first trial of rioters arrested after deadly violence in Tibet's capital last month.
The sentences were announced Tuesday during two sessions of a one day trial at the Intermediate People's Court of Lhasa, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. State broadcaster CCTV showed the convicts being led, heads bowed, out of a packed courtroom. It said 200 people attended the trial, including monks, doctors and other representatives of "the masses."
Three men received life sentences, including a Buddhist monk identified as Basang, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Basang led 10 people, including five other monks, to destroy local government offices, burn down shops and attack policemen, Xinhua said.
Of the other five monks, two were sentenced to 20 years, and the other three to 15 years in jail.
