Abbas to Rice: I'm working to end Gaza crisis

The United States pledged to donate $50 million to Palestinian refugees on Friday, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged the US to pressure Israel to end its military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Abbas told US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a telephone call that he was making every effort to end the Gaza crisis, the Palestinian leader's office said. The US donated the money to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency - a body responsible for the welfare of Palestinian refugees - to aid Gaza Strip and West Bank residents impacted by the fighting, US Assistant Secretary of State David Welch said after meeting Abbas on Friday.
