Austria to charge convicted rightist with new cases of defending Nazi era

Officials said they plan to charge a rightist already in prison for defending and promoting the Nazi era with new charges of the same offense. The Vienna public prosecutor's office said Friday it has prepared a case against Gerd Honsik. Honsik's lawyers can still appeal before formal proceedings are lodged. Honsik has been jailed since December after being convicted for writing a book called "Hitler Innocent," which attempts to justify some Nazi era crimes. He fled to Spain in 1992 during the trial prompted by the book but was extradited in August and sentenced in December to 18 months in prison. The prosecutors office says the new charges stem from Honsik's activities between 1987 and 2007.
