Bangladesh arrests 144 for violating curfew on anti-government demos

Bangladeshi police said they have arrested 144 people for violating a curfew aimed at halting days of violent anti-government demonstrations, as courts ruled Saturday that police can continue to interrogate five teachers and a student leader over the protests.
At least five teachers at two prominent universities who backed the student-led protests have been arrested since Thursday in raids on their homes.
Other teachers reportedly escaped before security forces arrived to detain them.
No new demonstrations have been reported since the curfew was imposed Wednesday in six major cities after student protests erupted demanding the removal of army posts on campuses and an end to emergency rule.
