Belgian gov't to approve troops for Lebanon force

The Belgian government will contribute troops to the expanded UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, a government official said Friday. The formal announcement is expected later Friday, but a government official said there was "a political agreement" to move ahead. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. "There is a decision. It just needs to be formalized," he said. The number of troops has not yet been announced. Earlier Friday, Defense Minister Andre Flahaut had hinted a decision was imminent. "There is great coherence between the positions of (Foreign Minister Karel) De Gucht, the prime minister and the other members of the government to send troops to Lebanon," he told VRT network.
